Family connections big factors in housing decisions

Perhaps not surprisingly, family and community factors play a large role for seniors deciding where to move.

Housing decisions by seniors often involve more than just finding a new home.

A next-step for longtime homeowners are often heavily influenced by family, community connections and planning for the future. Here are some eye-opening facts from real-estate industry sources:

  • 16 percent of home buyers are over 69 years old according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR).
  • Nearly 30 percent of seniors over age 69 move to be closer to family, friends, or relatives. (NAR)
  • More than 338,000 Americans moved for retirement in 2023, a 44 percent increase from 2022! (NAR)
  • 25 percent of retirees who do move, moved to a different state. (Raymond James)
  • In 2021, 15 percent of multigenerational homes included parents moving in with their grown children. (Pew Research Center)
  • Two-thirds of adult children expect to help their aging parents relocate. (Pew Research Center)

Whether it’s downsizing, moving closer to loved ones, or exploring multigenerational living, these transitions are deeply personal and often emotional.
